C'est en 2008 que la journaliste Hilde Baele rencontre au Rwanda, un jardinier du nom de Mzee Jerôme Sebasoni. Il lui raconte un passé haut en couleur tellement incroyable que la curiosité de la journaliste en est piquée : Jerôme se présente comme ex-rebelle Inyenzi, devenu le guide de Che Guevara lors de son séjour en Afrique. Pendant 12 ans Hilde va tirer le fil de cette découverte et entamer une enquête approfondie avec son compère Jeroen Janssen, à la fois dessinateur et véritable acteur de cette quête.
Une quête qui les mènera du Congo au Burundi, en passant par le Rwanda pour aller jusqu'à Cuba. Si Mzee Jerôme décède brusquement au cours de l'aventure, les auteurs restent chargés d'une mission, puisqu'avant sa disparition il leur disait : "Tu peux vérifier. C'est la vérité. Et je compte sur toi pour en faire un livre. Je ne veux pas mourir sans avoir laissé mon témoignage. Je ne veux pas être oublié.
Je n'ai pas vécu pour rien".
